Okay, so just to get this out there, I’m a completely addicted to Orangetheory Fitness. I drink the orange Kool Aid 6 days a week and really love everything about it and how I’m able pushing myself every day. At Orangetheory, they have benchmark challenges at least twice a month. A 1 mile run for time, 12 minute run for distance, 500 meter row, and so on. Over the past 5 benchmarks, I’ve worked out next to this woman named Debbie who is total beast. After the first couple of benchmarks, I hit personal records (PR’s) on both and so did she. I’d set my pace, she’d match it. She’d up her pace, I’d match it. We then decided that we are each other’s good luck charms and we have to do all of our benchmarks next to each other and we have and we’ve PR’d on every single one. I’ve come so far whether it be starting a 1 mile run at 6mph and then 7, 8, and now 9mph or shaving off critical seconds from my rowing, she pushes me to exceed my best every time.
So, what does this have to do with business? Well, creating and executing a strategy for your organization is hard. You need talented people who compliment your skill set, you need someone to hold you accountable, and honestly sometimes someone to vent to. Trying to go it alone doesn’t usually work because no one has all of the skills or bandwidth to do it all and its easy to lose focus on the long term when you’re trying to manage the day-to-day. You need someone to hold you accountable, help you set goals, and keep you motivated toward your long term goals. You need a Debbie!
Albert Einstein once said “anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” Getting out of your comfort zone can be hard and there’s always the fear of failure, but having someone to challenge you makes a big difference. When I work out with Debbie, she knows what I can do, and just her knowing that keeps me pushing harder. There’s been research that has shown that someone may see climbing a mountain as a very difficult challenge, however; when asked how hard it would be when standing next to someone, say a friend, they perceive it as being much easier. Having someone next to you that you can trust simply makes challenges easier and helps you maintain the focus that is needed.
